Helicopter rescue on Rathlin Island

The man’s vehicle rolled three metres down an embankment onto the shoreline close to Ballynagard Cottages just before 7am on Wednesday.

Emergency crews including volunteer firefighters from the Rathlin Island Fire Station and the Coastguard responded to the incident.

Fire crews, working in conjunction with the Coastguard, stabilised the vehicle and cut the man free.

He was put on a spinal board and taken in an ambulance to the island’s aircraft landing point. An ambulance service spokesperson said the man had non-life threatening injuries.

He was then taken in a Royal Navy helicopter to Causeway Hospital, where he is in a stable condition.
