Egypt FM heads to US as helicopter delivery approved
Cairo (AFP) – Egypt’s foreign minister Nabil Fahmy was travelling to the United States on Wednesday, his ministry said, a day after Washington decided to provide Cairo with 10 Apache military helicopters.
Washington had imposed a temporary freeze on the delivery of major weapons to Egypt, including the Apaches, following the military-installed authorities’ brutal crackdown on supporters of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi since his ouster last July.

Airbus Helicopters details EC225 shaft changes
Airbus Helicopters has provided further details on the changes it made to a key gearbox component on the EC225, expected to be delivered to operators for retrofit in July or August.
The majority of the 11t type’s global fleet was grounded for around 10 months following the second of two North Sea ditchings in October 2012. The cause of the two incidents – which led to a ban on overwater flights – was later traced to failure of the bevel gear vertical shaft in the helicopter’s main gearbox.
EASA approved the modified component on 22 April, which will now be rolled out to operators.
Jean-Brice Dumont, executive vice-president for engineering at Airbus Helicopters, says the alterations to the shaft deal with three issues – corrosion, residual stress and stress hot spots.

EASA certifies redesigned EC225 gear shaft
The redesigned vertical bevel gear shaft for Airbus Helicopters’ EC225 has been certified, enabling its production and retrofit on the aircraft’s global fleet, as well as its installation on all future EC225s.
The new design, certified by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), eliminates all three factors that, in combination, had caused two vertical shaft ruptures in 2012, resulting in two high-profile controlled ditchings in the North Sea. Airbus Helicopters said the shaft provides corrosion resistance, compensates for residual stress and eliminates stress hot spots.

India-Russia-Afghanistan synergy: India to pay for Russian arms supplies to Kabul
Afghanistan, Arms, Army, India, Military, Russia, Terrorism, War
It is a done deal and already under implementation, quietly but surely: securing India’s and Russia’s strategic interests in Afghanistan in the not-too-distant scenario of the drawdown of American and NATO forces from Afghanistan.
Under this historic deal, Russia will supply its own defense equipment to Afghanistan and India will pick the tab.
This way both India and Russia would be able to bolster Afghanistan’s self-defense capabilities and make Afghanistan’s armed forces more capable to take on imminent threat of the inevitable enemy: Taliban.
